چکیده

MORRISON, PETER, MARIO ROSENMANN, AND JOHN A. SEALANDER. Seasonal variation of myoglobin in the northern redbacked vole. Am. J. Physiol. 2 I I (6) : 1305-1308. 1966.-A marked increase in myoglobin concentration was observed in thigh muscle (I. 3 -+ 3.2 mg/g) and masseter (4.7 -+ 10.1 mg/g) from northern red-backed voles (Clethrionomys rutilus dawsoni) during winter (Jan.-Feb.) as compared with the minimum summer values (July-Sept.). Heart-Mb showed a more modest change (4.3 --) 5-7 mg/g>. B ecause the life span in this species is synchronized to the year, with growth ceasing in fall and resuming in spring, the concentration increase during the fall was by synthesis of Mb, but the decrease during the spring represented dilution of Mb by growth.

Population limitation of the northern red-backed vole in the boreal forests of northern Canada.

1. Across the vast boreal forests of North America, no population cycles in Clethrionomys species occur. In Eurasia, by contrast, some Clethrionomys populations of the same species undergo regular 3-5-year cycles. We examined the effects of nutrients, food, competitors, predators and climate on population limitation in the northern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas) in the south-wes...

Owl winter irruptions as an indicator of small mammal population cycles in the boreal forest of eastern North America

Contrary to what is observed in Fennoscandia, it seems to be widely accepted that small mammals do not exhibit multi-annual population cycles in the boreal forest of North America. However, in the last thirty years, irruptions of vole predators such as owls have been reported by ornithologists south of the North American boreal forest. While such southerly irruptions have been associated in Fen...

Seasonal and Sexual Differences in American Marten Diet in Northeastern Oregon

Information on the diet of the American marten (Martes americana) is vital to understanding habitat requirements of populations of this species. The frequency of occurrence of prey items found in 1014 scat samples associated with 31 radiocollared American martens in northeastern Oregon included: 62.7% vole-sized prey, 28.2% squirrel-sized prey, 22.4% insects, 19.5% birds, 13.3% plant material, ...

Edge Effects and Isolation: Red-Backed Voles Revisited

We examined demographic responses of California red-backed voles (Clethrionomys californicus) to forest fragmentation in southwestern Oregon at sites where this species has previously shown negative responses to fragmentation. Voles were captured in live traps and released. Voles were rarely caught in clearcuts surrounding 11 forest fragments, but relative vole density did not decrease from the...

The seasonality of reproduction in photoperiod responsive and nonresponsive northern red- backed voles (Myodes rutilus) in Alaska

High-latitude arvicoline rodents usually reproduce in warmer months, but winter breeding has been documented in several species, including the northern red-backed vole (Myodes rutilus (Pallas, 1779) Wilson and Reader, 2005; formerly Clethrionomys rutilus (Pallas, 1779)). We tested whether the reproductive condition of the species is linked to changes in environmental parameters or its body cond...
